Water is essential for any living thing. When starting baby chicks, or any animal, providing water and food are the most important things to ensure their survival. Here are a few tips regarding that will help you get your new baby chicks off to a good start.
Tap water is often cold and can be shocking to the system of a day-old baby chick, especially one that has been shipped through the mail. As you set up your chick brooder and get it warm and ready for your new chicks, be sure to also fill their waterer and let it sit so that the water comes to room temperature. Drinking this lukewarm water will be less of a shock to the baby chicks and will help them adapt to their new environment more quickly. If you’re brooding in a basement, garage, or a barn where temperatures are cooler consider using lukewarm water and refreshing it often to keep it slightly warm during the first few days after your chick’s arrival.
Gro-Gel Plus is also a good way to hydrate your chicks and give them an extra boost. When mixing the GroGel use room temperature water as this will also help your chicks during their first few days in their new home.
